Thornapple Kellogg Schools has openings for bus drivers - both full and part time. The Drive a Bus event continues tonight from 5-7 p.m. Anyone with a valid drivers’ license can come out and test drive a bus in the parking lot with a trained driver riding along.
TK Transportation Director Chuck Walker said the district currently has openings for full and part-time drivers, but especially needs full-time drivers for the coming school year. He said many people are often intimidated by the size of the bus and that’s why he wanted to give people opportunities to test drive a bus.
Walker said when fully staffed, TK employs 30 drivers covering 26 routes and roughly a total of 125 square miles within the district. They transport about 2,800 elementary to high school students every day. Drivers are equipped with tablets that help them navigate routes and stops.
He said driving a bus can be a rewarding job for drivers who make lasting connections with their riders.
