Service Learning Project Spreads Comfort

General education students paired with students with special needs worked together in a service-learning class project to make blankets to donate. Each year, the class votes on a service project to undertake.

After raising $300 selling stickers and other items during lunches, class members went shopping for material. They chose a variety for children of all ages - from a bright yellow background covered with black and white soccer balls, a Detroit Lions logo, sea turtles, colorful plaids and bright flowers. Students said the hardest part of the project might have been the shopping for material because there were so many good options available.

Working together, students measured, cut, and tied 16 blankets to deliver to the hospital.

The class for students with special needs is led by Mrs. Lienesch. “The students are in charge of planning the process and working together to complete their project,” said Lienesch.

Past projects and ongoing service projects include helping with the Classmates Cares program, promoting disability awareness, making inspirational signs for Carveth Village, and conducting a cereal drive for food pantries.
