Students Light Up With STEM Project

All Lee Elementary students have been working on a STEM project during library time this week. The special card includes a circuit grid on the inside. Students have to connect the circuit to get the power to a battery to make the reindeer nose on the outside light up.

“We don’t get to do a lot of STEM projects but we thought this would be a fun project,” said Lee Librarian Becky Branch.

She explained the process to students.  “There are some brown lines marked on the inside of your card. You have to put some of this copper tape on those lines and make sure the lines are completely covered so your circuit is complete and your battery will light up,” she said.

Some students were able to get their reindeer nose to light up on their first try.  Others had to do some troubleshooting and figure out why their card wasn’t working properly. With a little help, everyone was able to make the reindeer’s nose glow.

“It really gives them a chance to go back and look closely at their work and see where maybe there is a mistake,” said Branch. “Sometimes science projects don’t always work the first time. You have to go back and troubleshoot.”

Zayne Brown was excited when his card lit up just like it was supposed to. “I love it,” he said.  “Look how it glows!”
