TKHS Plans Drive-In Commencement Program

The district had hoped by waiting until July to be able to hold a traditional ceremony in the stadium, but COVID-restrictions still in place make that impossible.

High School Principal Tony Petersen sent a letter to all senior families. “We feel the drive-in format will be the best option as this will allow all of our graduates to be together for the ceremony with members of their family in attendance,” he wrote.

Each graduate will be permitted one vehicle for the ceremony – with no oversized vehicles allowed.  The parking lot will open at 6 p.m.  A large covered stage will be set up at the front of the parking lot near the entrance to the stadium and high school. Large screens will be elevated to allow viewing of the ceremony throughout the parking lot. Additionally, the ceremony will be live-streamed on the district’s Facebook page and on the MiTK News (bit.ly/mitknews) YouTube channel. Audio will be available during the ceremony through an FM transmitter that will play through a vehicle’s radio.

Graduates will remain in the vehicles with family members until directed to exit their vehicles and approach the stage to receive their diplomas. Graduates and families are asked to follow all social distancing guidelines before, during and after the ceremony.

“We are looking forward to finally celebrating this milestone with the class of 2020,” said Petersen.
