School Messenger at TK is used for:
- Announcements and updates
- Attendance messages at the High School, Middle School and Page Elementary
- School Closings and delays. This includes early morning calls to ALL FAMILIES unless you customize your settings (see below).
- Low lunch balance.
- Non-school hours and school hours emergency announcements.
The system relies on accurate telephone numbers and email addresses. When new students enroll, the contact information entered into PowerSchool goes to School Messenger.
Families new to the district including incoming kindergarten and Young 5 students, will not receive their Power School login information until it is sent through School Messenger.
For questions, please contact the TK Tech Department at [email protected] or 795-5444.
To check your contact information or customize your preferences, follow the directions below.
Please know, all contact information changes MUST be made through your student’s school building.
Accessing School Messenger:
- Log into the PowerSchool Parent Portal.
- If you do not have an account you can access directions for setting one up here.
- Click the School Messenger link located on the bottom left of the Parent Portal page.
- The first time you access School Messenger you will be asked to confirm your name, email address, and phone number.
- Once in School Messenger you’ll see a list of messages sent within the last 30 days.
Editing how you receive School Messenger Notifications
It is recommended that you customize your contact preferences, or more specifically tell our system HOW you want to receive messages, via phone call, email or text message.
- In the upper left hand corner, select Settings (three lines ) and click Preferences. Scroll down to My message preferences.
- Under My message preferences you will see the different categories of messages that are sent from the school district and how you receive them. Green indicates that the message is being sent, gray shows that it is not. Simply click on the phone, SMS and/or envelope to change your current settings.
- You might need to select the phone, SMS or email address you prefer. Simply select the information you prefer and click Save.
SMS Text Messages
In addition to phone and email notifications sent via SchoolMessenger, we offer a SMS message notification service to TK families that have students enrolled in the district.
- To opt-in to receive SMS messages from Thornapple Kellogg Schools, you may simply text “YES” to 6758.
Please note, although this is a provided service, the District is not responsible for any text message charges that you may incur by option-in to this service. Please check with your wireless provider for specific details about any possible charges.
A few important notes:
- At least ONE contact method must be selected for the two emergency categories.
- If the system contains incorrect numbers or email addresses, please call your school.
- If you don’t see the SchoolMessenger option when you log in to PowerSchool, perhaps you are logging in to your student’s account. To get your parent login information, contact your school.
- If you need additional assistance, email [email protected]
SchoolMessenger App
Another great way to stay connected is to install the SchoolMessenger app onto your mobile device. The app is packed full of features and allows you to fully customize how you would like to receive notifications from your student's school and the district right from the app.
